Tonight on Five

Another season, done, over. Well, almost. There are a few games left in the 2005 season, some of which could have a large impact on the playoff picture. Here is what you can expect tonight on Five.

There is no night game on the final day of the regular season. Therefore, everything we show will be "as-live." Of course, it is a dream of ours to be able to break into Five's programme schedule and show you every pitch, live, as it happens. But we all know that's impossible. So we will do our very best to reward those brave enough, bold enough, strong enough to stay off the Internet, and not call stateside friends for updates. Yes it will be tough, but you can do it!

So then, what game is on Five tonight? Well, we follow ESPN, and they say that they will broadcast the Yankees vs. the Red Sox. In past years, they have bounced around to other important games during their featured match up. Today those will be the White Sox vs. the Indians, the Astros vs. the Cubs, and the Phillies vs. the Nationals, and any other significant moments...I'm hoping to see Mike Piazza's last at-bat as a Met. There's no guarantee they will do that this year but chances are good that they will follow their usual format.

So, what are the possibilities concerning today? We already know the Yankees have won their eighth consecutive AL East title, so...

If the Red Sox win the wild card — they clinched a tie yesterday when the Indians lost — the Yankees would play the Angels, who stayed a game back of the Yankees in the race for home-field advantage with a 7-6 win over Texas last night.

A Yankee win or an Angel loss today guarantees New York would have home field if they play the Angels in the best-of-five ALDS.

But if the Yankees lose and the Angels win — giving the teams the same record — the Angels would get the home field because Anaheim won six of 10 games against the Yankees this year.

If Cleveland is the wild-card winner, meaning they defeated Boston in the 163rd game to take place on Monday at 19.00 EST at Fenway Park. It would play the team with the second-best record in the first round, which would be the Yankees, who would have beaten the Red Sox and stayed ahead of the Angels.

For the Phillies to get the NL wild-card spot, they must defeat the Nationals, and the Astros must lose to the Cubs. If that happens, their will be a 163rd game on Monday in Philadelphia at 16.00 EST to decide who gets into the post-season. If the Phillies win the wild card, they will play the Cardinals in the NLDS, while the Padres will play the Braves. If the Astros go through to the post-season, then they will play Atlanta while the Cardinals play San Diego.

Enjoy!
