Berkman's a Yankee.
I may cry, then burn my signature banner tomorrow. |

Edwin Jackson for Adam Dunn represents a horrifying deal from a Nationals perspective.
Reminds of Nick Johnson heading to the Marlins where we went from a position of some strength to desperately dealing him away for a 4-11, +5 ERA AA southpaw. |

According to Buster Olney, the Astros "are picking up a lot of Berkman's salary, and didnt receive any top prospects". Did they just give him away then.
Berkman will love playing in that left handers playground. A,though it begs the question, what does this mean for Nick Johnson when he's back?
Not really sure what the Sox can do to respond. We're 7 games out of 1st, 5.5 from wildcard. Wouldn't like to see our "top prospects" be traded for someone like Scott Downs. Maybe i think it's best if we stand pat and do our shopping in the winter. In the meantime get Dustin Richardson and Michael Bowden up in the 'pen, and upgrade from within.
With Pedroia and Ellsbury yet to return, still a chance. |

| Regarding Downs, the Blue Jays are trying to be quite clever here as we know that the Sox and Yankees are interested him. Therefore we are playing you off against each other trying to get an big return on a 30-something reliever who is hitting free agency this year. My fear is we may get too greedy (rumours are we want Montero from the Yanks) and both sides end up walking away. |

In theory it's a good idea. Apparently we were having a little look at Berkman, and within the day the Yankees got him.
Mark Teixeira did it in his free agent period.
It's a dangerous game, but i can see the Red Sox making a panic move, and Scott Downs may be that player. |

Davis has been sent to the Minors. The Rangers will probably platoon Moreland and Cantu. |

That Nick Johnson 'trade' marked the last time Stan Kasten mentioned 'The Plan'.
We talk of 'Philosophies' now.
If it walks like a salary dump, quacks like a salary dump its probably the Dunn for Jackson deal.
Still think he'll be in a Rays uniform tomorrow, with something like Rodreiguez and Jake McGee maybe in DC. |

Why? They have Teixeria (sp) at 1st. Do they need a DH that badly? |
If a player of Berkman's calibre becomes available and his price falls so low then you have to look at him.
He'll essentially take the majority of ABs from Cervelli, sees a tonne of pitches, has cost very little.
It's a steal for the Yankees. |

I think Adam Dunn stays. Dunn for Jackson as a salary dump makes no sense as they are both owed similar amounts through the end of the year and Dunn would bring two 1st round picks in the winter as they would offer arb and he would surely decline.
Now the Yankees are out of it there doesn't seem a good fit for Dunn unless the Rays believe he can strictly DH. The only NL team seemingly in the running are San Fran... |
